It became a municipality in 1858. Ipswich was a prime candidate for becoming the capital of Queensland, but Brisbane was instead chosen in 1859. It was proclaimed a city in 1904. The city became a major coal-mining area in the early 19th Century, contributing to the development of railways in the region as a means of transport.

The Box Flat Mine disaster occurred on the 31 July 1972 when 17 miners lost their lives after an underground gas explosion, 14 men who were working in the vicinity of the explosion and three miners who were working on a belt adjacent to the mine entrance.
It idea to build this memorial started at the Ipswich Historical Society, where in June 2008 a group of retired mineworkers, who later became known as the Coalminers Committee, met regularly every Tuesday. In addition to mining a few ton of coal, the group generally discussed both past and present issues of the coal mining industry.
