It was gypsum, or plaster, discovered in extensive surface beds along the creek named for its discovery—Plaster Creek.
Soon after the creek was known as ‘Plaster Creek,’ a tragically more appropriate name because the extensive gypsum mining that ensued caused the creek to become so degraded it was no longer able to support walleye. As the city of Grand Rapids developed and expanded, the quality of Plaster Creek progressively declined.
